How to prevent the summer news drought

I worked as a summer substitute at Göteborgs-Posten, and the role was truly hands-on. I handled everything from breaking news and shift work to long-form features and press conferences. The position came with a high level of responsibility and strong expectations for delivering from day one.

Planning, persistence and process

I developed an early social media strategy with ideas on how to bring the story to life through video. I asked the interviewee Ronny to share his own material, which I then turned into a short "vlog". I started researching and reached out to my case, Ronny Andersson, even before the summer started. It was more challenging than you'd think to schedule an interview with a hitchhiker who never stays in the same place for more than a day. The process taught me patience, but also persistence and flexibility. Eventually, he happened to pass near Gothenburg and the photographer and I were able to go out and meet him. It's a great example of how I work proactively, planning ahead, while still staying flexible when needed.

Me and the photographer also recorded several sequences with Ronny when we met him on the road. But things rarely go as planned - it was pouring rain and only a few cars stopped during the interview. Still it turned into a thoughtfull conversation about trust and coonnection in today's society. The story was also complemented by interviews with an ethnologist and a travel writer.
